No matter how green you’ve made your home, we- and our children- are still constantly exposed to a slue of toxins every single day. The air we breath, the food we eat and the water we drink all contain some level of toxins. Our body is designed to detoxify itself to some extent, but it’s always great to give it a little support whenever possible. A detox bath is a super simple, inexpensive way to do just this.
Benefits of a Detox Bath
- Gently detoxify the body
- Boost the immune system
- Soothe achey joints or sore muscles
- Calm hyperactive kids
- Soften and moisturize skin
- Improve circulation
- Reduce inflammation
- Promote a good night’s sleep
A detox bath can greatly benefit both kids and adults alike. They improve our detoxification and immune systems, help to calm us and reduce inflammation. They are also super easy to make and enjoy on a regular basis.
When making a detox bath, be sure to avoid using soaps and shampoos. The warm water helps to open the pores of the skin, allowing you to better absorb the nutrients in the water. You don’t want to add chemicals from your soaps and shampoos that would also get absorbed. Use this bath as purely a relaxing, soaking time.
Tip: You’ll see that each of the recipes below includes coconut oil. I always include it because the essential oils will bind to the coconut oil (instead of the side of your tub) and better stick to your skin to be absorbed. Coconut oil is also a wonderful and gentle moisturizer, safe for even the most sensitive skin.
1. Calming Lavender Epsom Salt Bath
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup baking soda OR 1 tsp vitamin C powder (to dechlorinate water)
- 1/2 cup epsom salt
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- 2-4 drops lavender essential oil
2. Immune Boosting Detox Bath
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup baking soda OR 1 tsp vitamin C powder (to dechlorinate water)
- 1/2 cup epsom salt
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- 2 drops wild orange essential oil
- 2 Tbsp bentonite clay (optional)
3. Respiratory Support Bath
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup baking soda OR 1 tsp vitamin C powder (to dechlorinate water)
- 1/2 cup epsom salt
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- 2 drop peppermint OR eucalyptus essential oil
Instructions:
1. While the bath is filling with very warm water (not too hot, but warm enough to create a sweat while soaking in it), add either the baking soda or vitamin C powder to neutralize the water. Allow to sit for 5 minutes.
This step can be skipped if you have a home water filter. Adding a neutralizer will dechlorinate the water so you are not absorbing toxic chlorine while soaking.
2. In a separate bowl, combine salt, coconut oil and essential oil of choice. Mix together.
3. Add mixture to the warm bath water, spreading around the tub evenly.
4. If using bentonite clay, add into the bath now.
5. Have your kids climb in the bath and soak for 20 minutes. Do not use any soaps or shampoos. Just allow them to relax and soak up all the benefits of their detox bath!
